Universal Infant Free School Meals (UIFSM)
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 automatically receive free school meals under the Government’s Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme. You do not need to apply for this.
However, if you receive certain benefits, we still encourage you to complete a Free School Meals application (see below), as this may allow the school to access additional funding to support your child.
Income-Related Free School Meals (Reception to Year 11)
If you receive certain benefits, your child may be entitled to income-related Free School Meals.
You may apply if you receive one of the following:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guaranteed element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit, and your annual gross income is no more than £16,190)
- Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
- Universal Credit with a household income of £7,400 or less per year (after tax and not including any benefits you receive)
If your circumstances have recently changed even temporarily you still have the right to apply.
How to Apply
You can apply using our online eligibility checker, which is quick and secure.
If your benefit claim has only recently been approved, there may be a short delay in confirmation. The system automatically re-checks eligibility daily for 30 days to allow time for Department for Work and Pensions records to update.
If you would prefer the school to apply on your behalf, or if you need support completing the form, please contact the school office.
Important Information
- All Free School Meal applications are treated confidentially.
- If your child becomes eligible, the school will receive additional government funding (Pupil Premium) to support their education.
- If your circumstances change and you no longer qualify, your child’s school will continue to receive Pupil Premium funding for up to 6 years under current protection arrangements.
We strongly encourage all parents to apply, even if you believe you may not be eligible at this time. The eligibility system carries out regular checks, and if your circumstances change, the school will be notified automatically meaning no further action is required from you.
When Completing the Application
Please ensure that all details entered match exactly the information shown on your Universal Credit (or other benefit) account, including full name and date of birth. This helps the system locate your record and avoids delays.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office we are happy to help.
